Guidelines for Pet Shop Registration
Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board — Read all guidelines before applying
- Every pet shop shall mandatorily be registered with Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board. The Registration certificate and the details of the species sold in the shop should be kept for display in a prime place.
- It is advised for the pet shop to be maintained in a permanent commercial building.
- Sale of pregnant animal, diseased animals, new born before the age of weaning (2 months) is not permissible. It is permitted to sell healthy animal which are certified by a registered Veterinarian.
- It is necessary that separate Isolation area should be available to keep the diseased animals.
- The pet shop should have enough ventilation space, temperature lighting facilities for housing each and every species displayed, based on their requirements.
- The pet shop should employ trained staff to take care of the animals kept in the shop.
- Different species should not be housed together.
- It is necessary to display the ID No, breed and value of different species of animals kept for sale in the pet shop.
- It is advisable to sell pups acquired from registered dog breeders.
- Each sale should be given receipt for the animal bought and a second copy of the receipt should be kept in the pet shop mandatorily.
- For sales of every animal the records details of vaccination, de-worming, treatment given to the animals should be made available to the buyer.
- The unsold pets should be suitably rehabilitated.
- Every Pet Shop shall display the name and address of the Veterinary Practitioner for emergencies.
- The pet shop should be periodically inspected by the jurisdictional Veterinary Officer.
- The persons involved in animal utility cases are ineligible to run a pet shop.
